Where I Belong
As many of you may know, I am on staff as a worship pastor at my local church (www.Gcomchurch.com) in Clarksville, Tennessee. It is an absolute blessing to be on staff at our church and to walk through the stresses and challenges of daily ministry that many people will never know. Point of fact, many of the realities of "church work" were even lost on me for years until I finally jumped in over my head and had to sink or swim. The challenges, failures, and successes of Kingdom work in the church have completely changed me to the core. Whether it is in the ways of perspective, or simply in my own spiritual walk, I have been forever changed by the weight of the responsibility that I bear.
One of the greater blessings of being the Worship Pastor is the ability to choose songs that I believe will intersect our congregation and lead them to a great understanding of the God that we worship and the reason that we should choose to do so. I get all of the song select CD's in my box at church. I get all of the emails from different artists who desire to come and "serve" our church. I've seen the mile long resumes, and had some phone calls with people who were frustrated with my hesitancy to bring them in and let them lead our congregation. When I was younger and just getting started in Building 429, I was the kid on the other end of the line who just could not understand what the big deal was. Today I guard my congregation, and I am careful with my decisions. I study the connection between the songs, service elements, and the sermons more than I ever thought I would, because I care genuinely about the people who trust me to lead them well.
For that very reason I have always been extremely hesitant to introduce any of Building 429's music to my church body. When “Listen to the Sound” was released last year my worship group immediately came to me and asked that we put “Where I Belong” in our “let's try this out and see if it works” rotation. After some consideration I decided that we would add it, but that I wouldn't lead it. After all if it's going to connect, then it's going to connect, right? My co-worship pastor Dustin York led it and the response was overwhelming. It's become a regular go-to song at our church, and I've led it twice. That's right, just twice. But each time I'm blown away by the response. Like many of the songs in our rotation, it's a super simple arrangement that is easy to sing the first time you hear it, and it has met many desperate people right where they stood. This is not our home, and no matter what comes in this life, it cannot hope to compare to the glory that is yet to come.
I hope this song blesses you and your congregation as well. Keep up the good fight out there and know that there is someone out here just like you, looking for the right song for the right moment, that a life might be changed!
Blessings,
Jason Roy
