Haiti Earthquake

January, 13 2010Comment

Port-au-Prince, Haiti, January 13, 2010—Christian humanitarian agency World Vision plans to begin assessing damage and preparing a relief response today after the major earthquake that hit Haiti Tuesday. The agency has worked in Haiti for 30 years and has some 370 staff in country.

Downed communications, blocked roads and continuing aftershocks slowed relief efforts overnight, with staff unable to leave the agency’s Port-au-Prince office for several hours due to fallen debris in the roadways.

“It felt as if a truck had hit a wall,” said World Vision staffer Magalie Boyer, of the initial tremor. “There is extensive damage in the city. People are getting ready to spend the night in the streets. They are not comfortable staying in their houses.”

“World Vision Haiti will distribute first aid kits to survivors, along with basic materials such as soap, blankets, clothes and bottles of water as an initial response,” Boyer added.

Meanwhile, World Vision staff from less affected regions of Haiti are mobilizing and the agency’s global experts are expected to arrive in the disaster zone as soon as possible. Crystal Penner, a World Vision aid worker, was in the central plateau region of Haiti when the quake hit: “There are relief goods prepositioned in various locations across the country, though the challenge will be getting those supplies swiftly to those in need,” she said.

“We would be very concerned about a quake of this magnitude anywhere in the world, but it is especially devastating in Haiti, where people are acutely vulnerable because of poor infrastructure and extreme poverty,” said Edward Brown, World Vision’s relief director in the United States.

Reaching hard-hit areas with supplies is expected to be a significant challenge due to damaged roads and infrastructure, including the main airport and government buildings.

Donations of cash are needed for the response. The public can help by visiting www.worldvision.org or by calling 1.888.56.CHILD.

Happy Holidays Everyone!

November, 26 20095 Comments

My wife and I finally got home for Thanksgiving today… Thanksgiving day that is, around 2pm in the afternoon. Life has been crazy for sure. We came off the road just in time to hop back on a plane and fly to North Carolina for a memorial service in honor of our dear friend Ronnie Coleman. The last time we saw him before he passed he reminded me that I was to play “You Carried Me” at his funeral, and there was never a question that I would be there with my beautiful wife to honor one of the most amazing men we had ever known. I’ve got to say that after watching a family that I’ve known and loved for the last 8 years walk through the mourning of their loss and then turn it into, not only worship and celebration, but a challenge… I am a different guy. I left his funeral thinking, Lord I’ve got some work to do. I think that was the message of his life: We’ve got work to do… we’ve got love to give, and we have hope to share… that was Ronnie, and I see it echoed in his family that he leaves behind. Which brings me to the other amazing thing that happened to me on the last night of our tour… well, last Sunday.

Anyone who’s been to our shows or read my blog knows that my wife and I have wholeheartedly embraced World Vision and their mission. You may have heard me speak at length about what it’s like for my wife and I to sponsor 3 children and how we challenge people to listen to their hearts and take a leap of faith to find that when God uses us… a lot of times he uses us in spite of ourselves and our weaknesses, (i.e. Moses and his speech… Paul and his past). You wouldn’t believe who the last three people to sponsor children on our tour were.

1) One of my crew

Honestly these guys hear about child sponsorship all the time and I worry that they get immune to it.. but the last child out of my hand in the building that night went to my good friend Johnny who had served without failing the entire tour. He didn’t miss a night of my speaking about WV.. mostly cause he had to run the sound board while everyone else stepped out to get a break… but when I counted down my last 10 children… I never thought that I would say zero after giving the last packet to him. It was truly an amazing moment.

2) My 6 year old son Avery

Ok I know what you’re thinking… “Yeah right, where’s the money gonna come from?” Which is exactly what I was thinking when I met him at the table. He said, “Daddy I want to sponsor a child that’s my age.” Ok son, but don’t you understand that we already sponsor 3 kids? “Yeah daddy but I really think I need to do it, those kids need some help and I’ve got lots of money at home in my room” BTW he has a jar full of quarters that he was talking about…. And I almost started arguing with him until I preemptively heard what he would probably say next: “But daddy, you said it doesn’t matter where the money comes from… cause if God calls you to do it then you have do it, RIGHT?” In that moment I realized that God was telling me that I had a blessing and a chance to teach my son and allow him to know that it’s alright to lead with his heart. And so after about 10 minutes and 40 child packets my son picked out a boy named Enerst from Zambia. He filled out all the paper work himself and today my family sponsors 4 children. My son will get his first allowance this month and he will begin a relationship with this young boy that could last the next 14 years!!!

3) Our nanny… and her quote said it all. “Well my gosh, if a 6 year old can do it then I know I can.”

Wow what a night… it was truly amazing… and it made me proud to say that our son showed me something first hand that I would be reminded of a few nights later at a funeral service for an amazing man. Ronnie Coleman’s life was about love. I left his funeral thinking, Lord I’ve got some work to do. I think that was the message of his life: We’ve got work to do… we’ve got love to give, and we have hope to share… that was Ronnie, and I see it echoed in his family that he leaves behind. I see it in a 6 year old boy who doesn’t know how, he just knows that he must. My son is the man… and he’s inspired me. How about you and your children/ family… what have they done that inspires you?

Happy Thanksgiving,
Jason

Talking With Michael

September, 2 20092 Comments

There’s something cool about sitting on an airplane with my boy Michael knowing that I’m 1 hour away from seeing my beautiful wife and children that is super cool. Then to make it cooler Michael and I have something on our minds today. Seems that the big thought is the NEXT building429 record. It’s always cool to pick Mike’s brain because honestly he is definitely an amazing….. WAIT hold the fricken phone… Mike just showed me his iphone and it’s exactly 4:29!!! I know it’s stupid but you’d be amazed how often we look at our watches at exactly 4:29. Ok back to Michael’s brain. He’s one heck of a set of contact lenses… by that I mean that Michael tends to bring a LOT of clarity to my crazy hair brained thoughts. Think of it this way… Michael is the Editor in Chief of almost everything that Building429 does and me… well I’m a visionary… Idea man that’s my thang. Jesse, he’s the implementer and the encourager so we all have specific roles to play and this new record is something that we’re already knee deep in the process of deciding where we’re going. So where do we think we’re going???? Let’s just say that we’re going to land in a town called “Honesty”. We’re hoping to bring you guys the WHOLE story musically, lyrically and on a ministry level. These are the things that capture Michael’s and my imagination as we move toward the next record….. we are all leaning heavily toward using Jim Cooper and Tony Palacios on the next record as well… what does that mean for you guys… well it means the team that made the first Building429 record would be making the newest one too!!! Pretty doggone cool if you ask me!!

Ohh and on a sidenote we had an awesome conversation about new lighting for the fall tour!!! I know, I know that I’m majorly A.D.D.!! You know that you love that about me! But people blinking lights have to be the coolest thing you could possibly add to a show right???? I mean come on who doesn’t love an amazing lighting show?? That’s what I thought. We’re talking about some serious LED TUBES and some other strobes added to the show. 2 more mover lights and some new signage to really take the stage to another level. OHHHH you should also know that we are revamping a large portion of the video wall content, and we’re completely changing the set for the Promise Remains tour. So just when you think you’ve seen it all………… WE CHANGED IT AGAIN!!!!

Hmmm here’s another tidbit that I wanted to mention as I grow closer to the long awaited reunion with my family….. We sponsored 510 kids on the Canadian tour with Downhere which according to WORLD VISION CANADA is the Biggest August that world vision Canada has ever had in their history!!!!!!!!!!! WHOOOOOHOOOOOOO!!! That’s right, the biggest month ever Praise the Lord!! So God is doing some super cool things. ————–

Ok weird bit of info…. If you ever see Michael in an airport or around an airplane just assume that he’s playing solitare on his iphone… I’ve never seen anyone get so sucked into a game as he is right now…. Hang on I’ll try to get his attention……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….. Aha!!! Houston we have made contact… and today it’s not solitare today it’s…….. some weird word puzzle game.

Anyway… just wanted to say thank you for all of your prayers around the world. God is doing some great things around us these days and we are still eternally grateful for all of the years you’ve spent encouraging us to keep the faith and keep running to the finish line!!! This might be my last post for a while as I’m headed out to vacation, but if you want to follow.. you’ll be able to right up to the moment I throw my iphone in the ocean at Wrightsville beach in approximately 2 days, on twitter at http://twitter.com/axl_roy
Hmmm the plane is slowing down and I’m leaning forward so we’re getting close to the announcem……………………….. yep there it is…. And my children are so close that I can almost see them. God bless and I’ll catch you again in Oklahoma this weekend!!!
Peace,
Jason
